You’re learning that девушка isn’t just another word for girl.
Memory-wise, this is the best case scenario. For example, you searched for девушка (girl) in Russian, and found that oddly enough, nearly every single девушка seems to be an 18-year old, nearly-naked girl. The pictures make sense, but they’re not quite what you expected. So if the images you get don’t make sense, skip them! You’ll get the right words later, from your own language’s frequency list.III. Russian has separate words for light blue and dark blue. Many languages don’t use the same Breakfast/Dinner/Lunch concept as English speakers. This list is just a time-saving tool stolen from an English frequency list, and it won’t work all the time.
Skip that word for now, or try a different translation. The pictures don’t seem to make any sense whatsoever. The pictures are just what you’d expect to see. There are three things that can happen here:I. You’re looking to see whether speakers of your target language associate the word you found with the sort of images you’d expect. Images: Once you have your translations, go to Google images and look up the word you found in your target language. Use the alphabetic list to get good translations for all of your words in a matter of minutes. I’m providing this list in two formats: thematic (animals, jobs, locations) and alphabetic. I’m a huge fan of Lonely Planet phrasebooks for this purpose they’re cheap, short, and easy to look through, and you’ll find good translations for most of these words in there. Translations into your target language: Look up translations for each of the words in this list (or if you’re learning a common language, grab my translations). There’s also blogs about language learning tips with Anki. If you’re still having problems with pronunciation, you could ask for help at the Reddit Forum for Anki Language Learning or try for help. But if you want to make the pronunciation or minimal pair flashcards on your own, then this post and the resources in it will help you do it all yourself. You can find pronunciation resources for a bunch of languages in the Languages section. There’s no reason to memorize a bunch of words incorrectly no one will understand what you’re saying. You should know what pronunciation to expect based upon the spelling of a word. Pronunciation (in general): Learn your pronunciation rules. The illustrations will help associate each word within a group of words even further, which will make them even easier to memorize, and aside from that, they look just wonderful. There are like 50 episodes so theres a lot to learn.So how did this illustrated lists come to be? This originated as a stretch goal for my December 2013 Kickstarter to illustrate the original 625 word list that I detail in my book. It starts off a little slow and doesn't help at all with writing (supplement it with something else so you don't get too dependent on romaji!) but after a couple episodes you definitely get a better grasp on spoken japanese and get more sentence patterns in your repertoire.
My recommendation would be to stick with it, finish the program, and then you should check out let's learn japanese basic on youtube. By the end Japanese sounds less like word salad and more like a logical language. The quizzes are really helpful for drilling in vocabulary. You build up a tidy little base vocabulary. It definitely made learning hirigana easier, since you're forced to read it right away and you have the audio to check yourself. When they come out with the second one, I'll be buying. You don't learn a TON, but for the price, it's a perfect primer for someone self studying japanese. I finished it and I loved it! I would definitely recommend it as a first resource.
